Syma X5C Explorers Review: A Thrill for Aerial Novices
Syma has a really great reputation and is known to be one of the top RC makers in the toy RC segment. They’ve released about 20 helicopter and quadcopters to date, all of pretty good quality. The Syma X5c is no different. Where many products in the budget aisle of the quadcopter market start with big promises and end in cheap substitutes for the real thing, the Syma X5C line refreshingly does exactly what it’s intended to do. The Syma X5C’s focus on sleekness and functionality makes it stand out as a good product for new quadcopter enthusiasts and experienced aerialists alike. The Syma X5C is tough, easy to learn, and equipped with the right features for its price point, resulting in a user friendly product that doesn’t look like a toy, is enjoyable to use, and won’t break down after the first flight.

Key Features
The Syma x5c comes with a 6-Axis Gyroscope which allows for strong balance in the air and precise hovering, even when there’s a light wind. For novices there’s a 360 Degree Eversion control that allows the X5C to roll continuously in flight without sacrificing control. The Spread Spectrum Control allows for greater flight distance, responsiveness, and duration with less interference than radio control. In addition to flight control the Syma X5C comes with a 2MP 720P HD Camera for taking fantastic pictures and videos from the air. If flying at night is your thing, the Syma X5C also comes with green and orange lights that helps you spot it at night and keeps you oriented.
The Syma X5C focuses on really doing a few things right. It flies best in light to moderate wind conditions, and gains some extra maneuverability when the camera and blade guards are removed. If design itself can be considered a feature, the X5C earns marks for keeping itself elegantly simple. It’s an affordable quadcopter, but it looks nice, which counts for something. More importantly, it looks nice while packing some serious capabilities in the air. The only issue with using it at its full range during the day is that its LED lights are barely visible. In order to keep oriented at long range during the daytime, additional precautions, such as a strip of colored tape, may be necessary.
Performance
In the air, the Syma X5C is graceful and responsive. The spread spectrum system of controls does a decent job preserving battery life, and the X5C can be expected to stay in the air for ten minutes or longer with the stock battery if used correctly. Making the mistake of leaving the camera video rolling will drain the whittle the battery life down. The X5C is fairly light-weight, especially without the camera or the guards, so it isn’t ideal on a blustery day, but flies impressively in calmer weather. The X5C could be described as “scrappy”. It’s small, quick, and can get back up after a hit in the event of a crash. For novice fliers, this is a highly desirable quality, and one that the quadcopter delivers well.
The Camera
The X5C’s 2MP 720P camera is moderately stable and takes good quality pictures most of the time. In line with general standards, it comes with a two gigabyte MicroSD card for easy transfer from the quadcopter to personal storage. The X5C’s controller, unfortunately for some, places more focus on controlling the flight of the quadcopter than it does the camera. The camera is fixed in one direction, zoom, and overall focus. Though it can be removed, it can’t be fitted to other locations on the quadcopter. Overall, the X5C’s camera performs as advertised, no more and no less. This definitely isn’t the choice if you’re looking to do advanced aerial photography like with the DJI Phantom 2 Vision, but it’s a great camera to start off with.

Syma’s X5C is one of the best quadcopters for new aerialists to enjoy, and is great for casual use by more experienced fliers. With its simplified list of features and sleek design, it provides enjoyment and good experience at a very low cost. Most people who only want a new flying gadget for recreational use will never need another quadcopter in their lives, but the X5C is good for aerial enthusiasts of all levels.
